The place
This secluded subterranean residence is nestled on the picturesque Kea island.
The design proposal
Embracing the essence of the Cycladic environment, our landscape design is an artful blend of natural inspiration and functional elegance. Our aim is not only to harmonize with the island’s beauty but also to accentuate the breathtaking views of the sea while providing protection from extreme weather conditions. From indigenous flora to the use of locally sourced materials, each choice is a nod to the timeless charm of the island. The subterranean nature of Beach House enhances its connection with the landscape, providing an intimate and secluded retreat.
The plant palette
The planting scheme is a diverse and resilient combination of Mediterranean plants that enhance the natural beauty of the island and complement the architectural design. Mediterranean trees, such as Tamarix parviflora with its feathery foliage, adapted to seaside conditions and Acacia cyanophylla, with its distinctive bluegreen foliage add structural diversity to the planting scheme. Aromatic herbs, low-growing shrubs and resilient perennials that thrive in Kea’s climate work together to create a lush and vibrant underfoot experience, creating focal points through their carefully combination and enhancing the overall aesthetics. Native grasses, such as Hyparrhenia hirta, flowing from east to west, introduce a dynamic and textural element to the space. Their graceful movement in the breeze adds a touch of softness, creating a visual contrast against the studry structures of other plantings.
